From July 1st, 2016, there is only one visa subclass available to students who want to study in Australia regardless of your field of study.

Basically, student visa processes will be changed and these include the introduction of a simplified student visa framework (SSVF).

Family Visas

Family Migration Visas

Under these categories, your close relatives who are Australian or Australian permanent residents can sponsor you to come to Australia:

  • Partner visa – you can apply for this visa if you are a wife or a husband or a de-facto partner of an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident.
  • Prospective Marriage visa – you can apply to come to Australia to marry your partner
  • Parent visa – a child who is an Australian citizen or a permanent resident can sponsor you subject to ‘balance of family’ test.
  • Child visa – your Australian or permanent resident parent can sponsor you if you are his/her dependent.

New Zealand Family Relationship (Temporary) Visa

You can live and work in Australia for a period of up to 5 years if you are a non-New Zealand family member of a New Zealand citizen who lives in Australia on a Special Category visa.

General Skilled Migration Visas

This is a very popular pathway for people who have the skills and ability to fill current skills shortages.

Under this category, there are 3 visa classes. You can only apply for any one of these when you to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) and get invited through SkillSelect.

  • Skilled Independent visa – this is a ‘points-based’ system – a sponsor is not required for this visa;
  • Skilled Nominated – this is a ‘points-based’ system – a state sponsorship is required
  • Skilled Regional Provisional Visa – this is a ‘points-based’ system – a temporary visa where a state sponsorship or a sponsorship of a relative living in a designated area is required.

Employer Sponsored Migration Visa

A great pathway to permanent residency.

Employer Nomination – a sponsorship of a business/employer is required based upon your skills, qualification and command of the English language.

Regional Sponsored Migration – work in regional areas of Australia

Temporary Work (Skilled) visa, also known as 457 visa – you have to be nominated by a qualified business sponsor.
